Welcome to Ankh-Morpork
From the Ankh-Morpork Merchant's Guild: Wellcome to Ankh-Morpork, Citie of One Thousand Surprises. Where you can wander the folklorique network of old alleys and picturesque streets, where excitement and romans lurkes arounde everry corner and much may be heard the traditional street cries of old time also the laughing visages of the denuzens as they goe about the businesse private.

Hem. Yes. Well. Let's just say that Ankh-Morpork is as full of life as an old cheese on a hot day, as loud as a curse in a cathedral, as bright as an oil slick. as colourful as a bruise and as full of activity, industry, bustle and sheer exuberant busyness as a dead dog on a termite mound. Don't say we didn't warn you.

The luggage appears with another POP! and the requisite flash of light. He's come to an alley that is surprisingly empty and he edges close to the wall and slowly opens his lid.

*head pops up from the trunk, eyes just over the edge, looks left, looks right, checking out the alley*
*murmurs*
Seems you do about as well with parking as I do...
*cautiously climbs out of the box, stretches, cracking his neck*
Definitely a different way to trav... *breaks off, nose wrinkling*
Blimey...
*coughs once, eyes water, nose still wrinkled*
It's a bit...strong...here.

The luggage, though he has no sense of smell, seems to understand. He opens immediately.
hanky

He then patters from one end of the alley to the other, keeping a 'lookout'. He returns to the Doctor and opens solemnly.

theeves

*removes the handkerchief, wipes his eyes and covers his nose*
*clears his throat, speaks through the hanky*
Thanks.

*starts to follow the luggage, then stops waiting for the luggage to return*
*reads the note*
*blinks*
Thieves? Where have you taken me!
*dares uncover his mouth and nose to speak, grumbling a bit*
Might be better that on this occasion I brought no money with me...
*sighs, calming*
Ah, well...
*removes the cloth from his mouth again, gradually habituating to the smell*
So... *hushed* Where are we headed?

Nothing unusual about someone standing by themselves down an alleyway. Not even anything that unusual standing by themselves down an alleyway talking to a box. Of course, he probably won't stay alone for very long. Probably new to the city; he's got a bit of an elvish cast to him, maybe down from Llamedos.

Oh, well, time for that authentic Ankh-Morpork experience. "Meat pies! Sausages inna bun! Get 'em while they're here!"

*jerks his head in the direction of the person shouting*
*grins, beaming*
Oh, hello!!

Dibbler bustles forward, having caught the man's attention. "A good afternoon to you...sir. New to the city, are we?" Must be, hanging around down alleys. "Long trip, I'd bet, road food, dwarf bread, I wouldn't doubt. Nothing against dwarves, of course! Can I interest you in some geen-you-inn Ankh-Morpork cuisine?"

Oh... Well... *shrugs, grins* Not that long of a trip, really! And besides... *grins more* I have a guide.... *gestures to the luggage*

*laughs a bit nervously, shrugs, sheepish, smiles* No money, I'm afraid...
So I won't be purchasing any Ankh-Morpork cuisine today...

*frowns suddenly*
Speaking of today, can you tell me the date?

"Oh, just in from the Sto Plains? You've got a bit of a Ramtops accent, if you don't mind me saying." He looks down at the box the man points to, just an ordinary traveling trunk. Well, maybe he's got a book in there. Or maybe he means the box; you never know what people will come up with these days.

"No money?! Did the Thieves Guild get to you already? They're not supposed to do that, gives a bad impression. I would put in a complaint, if I was you. Of course, if they was unlicensed, still put in a complaint, just a bit more ears nailed to knees, eh?"

Well, they use different calendars outside the city. "18th of Grune"

*grins, beaming*
Don't mind at all!

*eyes wide, nods slowly*
Right... And, um... *brow furrowing just a touch* Where exactly... would I lodge a complaint?

*grins*
18th of Grune, fantastic.
*adds quickly*
And, sorry, I've been... traveling... but what year is it?

His eyes widen slightly. Must be very new to the city then. And not have read up (or listened up, as the case may be) before he got here. "At the Guild House, of course. Don't worry, Mr. Boggis will sort it right out. Can't have unlicensed thieves going around giving the rest a bad name."

He gives him a slightly incredulous stare, but quickly turns it into a smile. No need to alienate a potential customer. Even one who said he had no money. Everyone said that, didn't they? So no one would rob them. "The Year of the Reversed Ptarmigan. In the Century of the Anchovy," he adds helpfully.

*nods, more firmly this time*
Right. Yes. Of course. And um... *voice turns a bit squeaky* And where would that Guild House be... exactly...?

*beaming, gleeful*
In the Century of the Anchovy. Brilliant! Great century!

"At the old courthouse, of course." It makes perfect sense, really. For Ankh-Morpork.

"Has been so far. I mean, they talk about dragging people kicking and screaming into the Century of the Fruitbat and here we are, Century of the Anchovy. Brilliant the things people come up these days! Paper money, you know! Paper!"

Oh course. Yes. Courthouse... *chuckles lightly* ...I should have thought of that. *more serious* And the, um, courthouse... which way would that be?

*eyes widen, part amazed, part shocked*
Really? Paper money? Paper money's new here?

He points off to the left. "Just head up here, to the left. It's the one wtih people climbing on the walls."

"Yep! Moist von Lipwig started it. Post-master, you know. Brilliant. Anyone with a printing press could make themselves as rich as they wanted!" He looks a bit disappointed. "Of course, it's very complicated paper money..."

Climbing on the walls?
*nods, swiftly*
Very good, sounds like I can't miss it.
So, could you... *pauses, brow furrows* I'm sorry -- I don't think I caught your name...

*nods*
Oh, well... Paper money always is.... Complicated, I mean. *adds quickly* One of the reasons I don't carry any.

"Yes, as practice." He grins broadly. "CMOT Dibbler, Entrepreneur and Purveyor of Fine Foods, at your service."

"Yes, some people were a bit resistant to switching over. Of course, the paper still stands for good, regular dollars. Just easier to carry around."

Practice? Of course! *pauses, can't resist asking* Erm, sorry, practice for what?

*grins in return*
Pleasure to meet you Dibbler. I'm the Doctor. Are you from around here?

*nods, serious*
Well, yes, yes... Definitely easier to carry around. Though, I don't know... *tips his head side-to-side* I rather like traveling light. Very light.

"For thieving. If you want to go robbing someone, much less chance of being seen if you go up the outside, right?"

"The Doctor? What kind of doctor?"

"Well, then, I should think this paper money would be right up your....street. Thing. Place where you live."

Right. *nods* Seems, well, logical actually. *brow furrows a bit* Sort of. *moves on* So, do you have any suggestions of places I should see in this city? *hesitates, glances briefly to the luggage, then continues* A friend of mine mentioned the... Mended... Drum... I believe it was...

Oh, mostly the academic sort... *frowns slightly* Of course, well, what sorts of Doctors are around here?

Well, I mean, there's money, then there's paper money, then there's no money at all. *nods* You tell me which one is traveling the lightest, hmm?

"Well," he considers, "the Shades, of course. Although might be odd, you not having any money. The Palace, I suppose. And the University." He nods. "Oh, the Drum, yes. Geen-yoo-inn heroes and barfights and things like that." Dibbler liked the Drum. People coming out were much more likely to buy his sausages.

"You're not a wizard, are you?" He looks over the Doctor appraisingly. "You don't look like a wizard. Not a sawbones? Not much call for that, not with all the Igors coming in from Uberwald."

"No money? But...your clothes, your passage to the city! You must eat!" Actually, not true, but he didn't appear to be a demon or a golem.

The luggage gets to his feet and pads over to the Doctor. He pokes him in the ankle and opens, being careful that Dibbler can't see.

fud

He tugs gently on the Doctor's pant leg.

*glances sidewise, out of the corner of his eye, at the luggage*
*to Dibbler*
Really? Heroes are at the Drum? That sounds like a good place to be then... Perhaps better than being out here with all the thieves...

*eyes widen*
*chuckles*
No, no, not a wizard! Just a doctor!

*shrugs, matter-of-factly*
Oh, I don't eat that much... *grins quickly, points to himself* See? Skinny. *brow furrows slightly* Passage to the city though? What's involved with that?

"Yes, heroes. It's the Drum, it's got a reputation."

Gives an almost inaudible sigh of relief. "Just a Doctor?"

"But...but...something?" He thinks. "Well, mail coach would be your best bet, really."

The luggage opens up again hurriedly to reassure the Doctor.

Photobucket

He starts to lead the Doctor out of the alley, but when he hears a voice, he shuts his lid with a snap and 'sits' down, his feet disappearing. Just an ordinary box. Nothing to worry about here.

Just at the end of the alley, the Bursar, having wandered off from the University, is having a very serious conversation with the wall. Or something standing in front of the wall. It's hard to tell.

"Well, you're not going to make any friends if you keep acting like that, that's all I know." The Bursar sounds a bit huffy. "What's that? He bumped you? You should have been watching where you were going."
