He's On A Mission From Dog
The luggage tiptoed out of the spa. He didn’t have to sneak, but it would make things easier. The pretty rose lady was gone and the watch man had said no puppies. The luggage didn’t understand exactly what was going on, but he was determined to do something. Anything. Blessed with unending patience and determination, he set off on his mission. He didn’t know precisely what he was looking for, but the luggage would know it when he found it. Like all things that used to be trees, he had an unerring instinct for dogs. He swayed back and forth, like a hound picking up a scent and then headed off for the lights of Margate.

He scuttled around a corner, looking like a bit player in a low-budget spy movie. If anyone saw him, they’d think he was some sort of animal. And if he met anyone, he’d just stop. Who noticed a box sitting on the sidewalk? Of course, he could just get rid of them, but that caused unnecessary complications. The luggage skittered across the street, calluses clicking on the pavement. He was getting closer.

A low grey building loomed ahead. This was the place. The luggage hesitated in front of the door. He could just barge through, but that too would cause unnecessary problems, not to mention a lot of noise. He backed up a few steps and took a run up at the wall. There was a bright flash of light (Damn! How he hated that!) and he was inside the shelter. He stopped just inside the door and waited, ‘looking’ around.

It’s quiet inside the shelter and the luggage glides silently along the concrete halls. There are wires everywhere.

Photobucket

A Rottweiler, aroused by his movement, comes to the wire and growls softly at the luggage. The luggage steps up to him and the Rottweiler has a good sniff. The dog is puzzled. He’s never smelled anything quite like this before. There is the scent of some strange wood and feet? And something else that he can’t identify. He gives a soft whine and the luggage brushes up against the wire mesh. He doesn’t like cages and briefly considers smashing through it and letting the dogs out, but the Rottweiler, having decided the luggage is no immediate threat, gives a prodigious yawn and goes back to his bed.

As the luggage moves slowly down the halls, there are other soft doggie noises, but no one barks an alarm. He comes to another door, labeled ‘Bernice’ (no matter as the luggage can’t ‘see’ it), and again there is the annoying flash of light. There is more noise in this room, puppy noise. The mewls and cries and tiny yips of those who cannot yet sleep through the night fill the room.AH! The luggage’s teeth flash briefly in a satisfied grin. This must be the place!

Puppies

The luggage stands unmoving before the basket of puppies. He seems to be staring, but it’s difficult to tell. He tiptoes just a bit closer and the puddle of fur shifts as the pups notice the movement. One of them, more curious and adventuresome than the others, struggles to the edge of the basket for a closer look. The luggage freezes, not wishing to frighten the dog. The pup struggles over the side and lands at the luggage’s feet with a soft plop and a whimper of surprise. It sniffs at the luggage’s toes. This is interesting! The puppy has never seen toes before. It gives one a tentative lick. The toes obviously meet with approval. Maybe they’re good to eat! The puppy tries a nibble. Then another. The luggage’s toes twitch. It tickles!. The pup, delighted by this new game, digs in and begins to chew enthusiastically. Soon its whole body is wriggling with delight. The other pups, curious and not wanting to be left out of the fun, join their sibling on the floor. There are more than enough toes to go around and the luggage finds himself surrounded by small furry bodies thoroughly enjoying themselves and his feet.

One of the check-ups he does during the day. Flipping David off for making a joke about him and his children, he doesn't look as he opens the door. "Don't start that," he tells David as he walks inside and closes the door behind himself, only then turns-

-the box.

Pressed against the door, heartbeat accelerating within three seconds, mind wild, the dogs underneath the fucking box. One blink. They are still moving.

Time is a foreign concept to the luggage. Things happen or they don't. It's just not something he even considers. So he had no idea how long he'd been here with the pups. He hadn't paid any attention to the sounds of people now moving about the building and there were no windows, so he couldn't feel the sun.

Busted!

He wants to tuck up his feet but there are still puppies playing with his toes, though a couple have fallen asleep.

Drat! And they'd been having so much fun!

The luggage turns a dark shade cherry with embarrassment. He hopes he's not in too much trouble.

"What the FUCK are you doing?!" His voice is hoarse with terror, rage not even playing into it yet. Aghast he is staring at the box, Katerina and Anatoly only twitching beneath its feet. Eyes wide he is staring on, hand going for the gun.

He was definitely in a lot of trouble. Very slowly, the luggage untangles various feet from various pups and moves back to show that none of them have been hurt.

The luggage is just a bit indignant that the man thinks he would hurt the puppies. They were just playing. The pretty rose lady had told the luggage they would be getting puppies and he could help take care of them and then the watch man said they weren't. It was very complicated to the luggage. Things involving people usually were. Far better to just stay here and play with the pups.

He moves back another step, to show he's in earnest.

"Don't step on them!" Frozen still he watches the Luggage retreat, then crouches down to the pups. Natasha is looking at him with her head cocked, Dmitri is nudging is foot. He passes his fingers over the other ones, still breathing, only asleep.

His heartbeat calms, just a little. He looks up, eyes hard as he stares at the Luggage again. "What are you doing here?" He cradles the dogs almost protectively to himself.

The luggage sags, dejected beyond belief. He thought puppies were some of the most wonderful things in the multi-verse. Maybe, just maybe if he showed the man how much he liked them and how he could help with them, he'd get to see them again.

Very slowly, so as not to startle him, the luggage opens his lid.
dog bones

Oh. And these too. Just in case.

Nikolai nuzzles his fingers sleepily, then waddles over to the box, nudges it and promptly falling asleep at its feet. He watches the box produce the items, and doesn't understand- "But you can't steal them, they are ... mine." He kneels now in front of the box. "I can't let you have them."

The luggage is overjoyed when one of the pups comes back to him! They like him. Now if he could just make the man understand!

Maybe...the luggage concentrates very hard. There is a faint smell of burning wood. The luggage sidles up to the man, carefully stepping around the puppy, and opens to show the piece of paper.

help

And one more, just for good measure.

Apologies for the luggage's atrocious spelling He's new to the pen thing. :)

As shock is winding down from his system he just looks at the Luggage. "These puppies? I mean? How? Why?" It's not a 'no'. At the moment he is just relieved they are unharmed and appear to continue being unharmed in the future. "Bit odd for a box, isn't it."

The luggage digs a toe across the floor. How to explain.

Once more the faint smell of smoke drifts through the room. The lid lifts.

He brushes the back of his hand over his eyes. "You're not burning, are you?" He glances at the Luggage suspiciously.

"And how do you- how do you propose to do that? What if you hurt them with those feet, and- all that." What if you decide to eat them swings in his voice, too.

The luggage shakes a foot. No, the pen thing is just very hard for him.

He just 'stares' at the man for the longest time. How to convince him he wouldn't do anything to the pups.

hurt

The luggage caresses a small furry head gently with a foot.

Alarmed he is instantly there with his hand, but the box is very careful with Nikolai, who just curls up further in his sleep. "But they are my dogs," he insists before the Luggage goes getting any ideas about that.

Earnestly, he opens once again.

Maybe that will work. He can't just take the puppies to his house. That would cause no end of problems.

"Where is your house?" He frowns and knows that there is no way in the world he will just let the Luggage take them without him being there, no fucking way. "They are-" he shrugs, "they are going to live at my place, I guess, in a few weeks."

"Oh wire!" It is yeah, but without the wire they'd run away, get killed, die without food in the streets. This way people can see them and give them a good home, make sure they are safe." Indignant. "And we do take them out to play."

He is so not reasoning with a box. No way.

The luggage just 'stares' at him. The pretty rose lady had said that the puppies were coming to stay at her house with the luggage. How can they be in two places at the same time? Even the luggage can't manage that! His gaze drifts to the sleeping bundles of fur. The puppies must be very magical.

The luggage considers this briefly. Then another sheet of paper.

They're not?! The luggage sags sadly. He must have misunderstood about the pups coming to his house. He 'looks' at the sleeping puppies and then at the man.

The luggage manages a shrug very well for something that doesn't have shoulders. He can't explain. It would take too long to write and he doesn't really know anyway. He just thought...

He approaches the puppies cautiously, not wanting to startle the man.

Not an answer then. "Where do you live?" A clue there, maybe.

He remains crouching, body a little tense and watching to see what the Luggage is going to do.
